Letter to Senator Hegar and Response

Dear Senator Glenn Hegar,

I urge you to contact Governor Perry and demand a special session of the State Legislature for the express purpose of passing a resolution or bill nullifying any Federal Legislation on Health Care in our state. The Leadership in Washington has continuously ignored the faxes, phone calls, and letters of the majority of the American People who are against Government Health Care and the requirements and mandates in the House Health Care Bill.

Our state is viewed as the best national example of individual freedom and free market principles. We must be a leader on this issue. This encroachment on the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution must be as vigorously defended by Texans and others just as the Alamo was by those Patriots who gave Texas our independence.

No longer does our President and Congress listen to We the People. They constantly ignore the Constitutional Rights of the people and the states. Our Constitution was written to restrict the powers of the Federal Government not to make it an all powerful Central Government. We as Texans have rights and states have sovereign rights under the Tenth Amendment. Unless we are willing to exercise these rights they will be lost forever.

Thomas Jefferson stated "When the people fear the government it is tyranny and when the government fears the people it is freedom." We as a country are entering a period where the central government is acting in a tyrannical fashion.

Nullification has worked recently with respect to the Real ID Card and Medical Marijuana. Over a dozen states do not recognize the Federal Government's authority in one or both of these issues. Our freedom of choice in health care is much more important than any of the above mentioned issues.

I hope you will take a stand with the American People, not as a Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, or Independent but as an American who is committed to the Principles put forth by the Founders in the United States Constitution.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Heiden

Dear Mrs. Heiden:

Thank you for writing. Please know that I am extremely concerned over what is currently going on in Washington D.C.

Congress continues to work on 2000 page healthcare bill that few can explain, defend or understand, but that we know will cost $1 trillion. This effort is being lead while we have a $9 trillion deficit and the jobless rate continues to increase in many parts of our nation. I am a staunch supporter of Texan's right to self-government and state sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I even filed legislation, SCR 39, during the last legislative session that stated such and also reaffirmed Texans' Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

I am firmly committed to working on any and every opportunity to ensure that further erosions of state's rights, individual liberties and frankly the outrageous expenditure of funds does not continue. A Special Session of the Texas Legislature is certainly an option, however, I have been very clear that whatever options are pursued, we must ensure that they do not distract energies from where they need to be focused and that is on defeating the current healthcare proposals. I have consistently encouraged people to contact their Federal Representatives to make sure their voices are heard and their interests are represented.

I have asked my staff to politely explain to many district residents that I do not serve in Washington D.C., because we get hundreds of calls from people who think I am in D.C. Accordingly, my message has been clear to focus everyone's attention on preventing the current bill from final passage by focusing everyone on the votes in D.C. and focusing the energy on those who actually prevent the outcome of another tax increase.

I do appreciate hearing from you on this issue, and will continue working with my conservative colleagues in the Texas Legislature to use our combined influence on the federally elected representatives in Congress.

I hope to stop by for a few minutes this Wednesday to greet you and other citizens in the area who are attending the film about the TEA party efforts showing at the Alamo Draft House in Katy.

Sincerely,

Senator Glenn Hegar
